Control cabinet solution for electro-pneumatic systems

Central, protected integration of pneumatics and control technology in an industrial-grade control cabinet.

For an electro-pneumatically operated system, the control unit was to be designed in a compact, clearly arranged way and protected against environmental influences. The objective was a central solution that structurally integrates both pneumatic and electrical components and reduces the installation effort on the machine. The implementation was carried out as a fully pre-assembled control cabinet with defined external interfaces.

At a glance

  • Industry: Mechanical engineering
  • Application: Electro-pneumatically actuated system
  • Medium / process: Compressed air / control and switching processes
  • Challenge: Central, protected and clearly structured integration of the control system under harsh environmental conditions
  • STASTO solution: Pre-assembled control cabinet with integrated pneumatics and electrical engineering
  • Result: Compact design, reduced installation times, increased protection and low-interference operation

The challenge

In an electro-pneumatically operated system, the functional control was to be centrally consolidated. Previously, individual components were installed in a distributed manner, which resulted in increased wiring and tubing effort as well as limited clarity.

In addition, the operating environment was harsh. Dust and splashing water imposed requirements on the degree of protection of the components used. The control system was required to operate reliably on a permanent basis while remaining easily accessible for maintenance and service work.

Standard solutions with individually mounted, decentralized components offered neither the desired protection nor sufficiently structured system integration. What was required was an end-to-end solution that functionally combines pneumatics and electrical engineering and can be integrated into the machine as an independent assembly.

The STASTO solution

Together with the machine builder, an electro-pneumatic function control system was designed and implemented as a compact control cabinet.

All pneumatic and electrical components were pre-assembled in the control cabinet, arranged in a structured manner and prepared ready for connection.

The implementation included:

  • Integration of pneumatic components including air treatment
  • Installation of the electrical control and distribution components
  • Ready-to-use internal wiring and tubing
  • Prepared pneumatic and electrical interfaces on the outside of the cabinet

This design creates a clearly defined system unit. The actuators on the machine only need to be connected, which reduces assembly times and minimizes potential installation errors.

The control cabinet thus represents an independent industrial value-added stage within the project. Design, assembly and functional integration are carried out in alignment with the requirements of the machine concept.

The result

The result is a compact and easily accessible control cabinet with a clear structure of all components.

By installing it in a closed control cabinet, the control elements are largely protected against dust and splashing water.

This increases operational safety and supports stable continuous operation with reduced susceptibility to faults.

Further advantages:

  • Increased level of automation through centralized control
  • Improved serviceability through a clear structure
  • Reliable operation of the electro-pneumatic processes
  • Longer service life of the installed components

The solution also offers organizational advantages: the machine receives a pre-assembled, tested unit, which provides structured support for commissioning and project execution.

Added value for machine builders

  • Reduced assembly and wiring effort on the machine
  • Clear interface definition for pneumatics and electrical engineering
  • Compact design with easy integration into the machine concept
  • Improved service and maintenance accessibility
  • Higher process reliability through protected design

This solution is particularly suitable for

  • Machines with electropneumatic control functions
  • Systems with increased requirements for protection against dust or splashing water
  • Modular machine concepts with pre-assembled modules
  • Applications with clearly defined pneumatic and electrical interfaces
  • Retrofit or modernization projects with central control integration
